The Noun: Second declension

The second declension includes masculine nouns with zero and endings and neuter nouns with -о,-е,-я endings.

These nouns are divides in three groups: hard, soft and mixed. In The Noun: Declensions article it was explained which nouns belong to each of these groups, so now it is time to learn how to change the nouns according to the cases and their groups.

The nouns of the second declension change depending on the group they belong to and the gender:

Comments

  1. In the Genitive case masculine nouns can have “а(я)” or “у(ю)” endings.

    а(я) ending have nouns which mean:

    • names of individuals and creatures: чоловік (a man) — чоловіка, кінь (a horse) — коня, кріт (a mole) — крота, Петро (Petro) — Петра;

    • names of specific countable objects: олівець (a pencil) — олівця, зошит (a notebook) — зошита, журнал (a magazine) — журнала;

    • names of settlements, regions (especially Ukrainian): Київ (Kyiv) — Києва, Севастопіль (Sevastopil) — Севастополя;

    • names of measuring units: метр (a meter) — метра, грам (a gram) — грама;

    • alien words which became terms: атом (an atom) атома, електрон (an electron) електрона, квадрат (a square) квадрата, відмінок (a case) відмінка.

    • names of vehicles: автобус (a bus) — автобуса, велосипед (a bicycle) — велосипеда, мотоцикл (a motorcycle) — мотоцикла.

    у(ю) ending have nouns which mean:

    • materials, liquids, chemicals: цукор (sugar) — цукру, мед (honey) — меду, оцет (vinegar) — оцту, пісок (sand) — піску;

    • natural phenomena: вітер (wind) — вітру, туман (fog) — туману, дощ (rain) — дощу, сніг (snow) — снігу;

    • formation: хор (a choir) — хору, гурт (a band) — гурту, натовп (a crowd) — натовпу;

    • surroundings or space: горизонт (horizon) — горизонту, простір (space) — простору, об'єм (volume) — об'єму;

    • names of states and territories: Китай (China) — Китаю, Сибір (Siberia) — Сибіру, Техас (Texas) — Техасу;

    • names of buildings, institutions, establishments, organizations: парламент (a parlament) — парламенту, вокзал (a railroad station) — вокзалу, театр (a theatre) — театру, супермаркет (a supermarket) — супермаркету, магазин (a shop) — магазину;

    • feelings, mental and physical state: біль (pain) — болю, страх (fear) — страху, жаль (pity) — жалю;

    • actions, processes: крик (scream) — крику, сміх (laughter) — сміху, спів (singing) — співу, ріст (growth) — росту;

    • abstract concepts: розум (mind) — розуму, мир (peace) — миру, характер (character, temper) — характеру, настрій (mood) — настрою.

     

  2. In the singular Dative case nouns can have parallel endings, but animate nouns tend to have -ові, -еві endings, while inanimate ones -у, -ю.

  3. Changes of -і- and -о- vowels: рік (a year) — року, сік (a juice) — соку, кіт (a “he”-cat) — кота, біль (a pain) — болю, лід (an ice) — льоду.

  4. In the Locative case г, к, х consonants change into з, ц, с:

    луг (a meadow) — у лузі,

    крик (a scream) — у криці,

    горох (pea) — у горосі.
