The Noun: First declension

The first declension includes feminine, masculine and combined nouns with -а(-я) ending.

These nouns are divided into three groups: hard, soft and mixed. In The Noun: Declensions article it was explained which nouns belong to each of these groups, so now it is time to learn how to change the nouns according to the cases and their groups.

The nouns of the first declension change depending on the group they belong to:

Notes

The stresses are underlined.

The  sign means that there is no ending (zero ending).

Comments

  1. In the singular Dative and Locative cases г, к, х before ending change into з, ц, с:

    вага (a weight) — вазі

    нога (a leg) — нозі

    рука (a hand) — руці

    ріка (a river) — ріці

    курка (a hen) — курці

    гуска (“she”-goose) — гусці

    свекруха (husband's mother) — свекрусі

  2. feminine noun “дівчина” in plural has the same form as the fourth declension neuter noun “дівча” and declines like the nouns from fourth declension.

  3. nouns: людина (a human being), дитина (a child), курка (a hen), гуска (a “she”-goose) in plural form loose their suffixes (люди, діти, кури, гуси) and decline like this:

  4. There are some features when using a plural Genitive case:

    • the last vowel changes from о to і:

      особа (a person: Nom., sing.) — особи (persons: Nom., pl.) — осіб (Gen., pl.)

      сирота (an orphan: Nom., sing.) — сироти (orphans: Nom., pl.) — сиріт (Gen., pl.)

      нога (a leg: Nom., sing.) — ноги (legs: Nom., pl.) — ніг (Gen., pl.)

    • if there are two consonants before ending, then the vowels о or е appear between them:

      думка (a thought: Nom., sing.) — думки (thoughts: Nom., pl.) — думок (Gen., pl.)

      казка (a fairy tail: Nom., sing.) — казки (fairy tails: Nom., pl.) — казок (Gen., pl.)

      жінка (a woman: Nom., sing.) — жінки (women: Nom., pl.) — жінок (Gen., pl.)

      вишня (a cherry: Nom., sing.) — вишні (cherries: Nom., pl.) — вишень (Gen., pl.)

      земля (a ground, land: Nom., sing.) — землі (grounds, lands: Nom., pl.) — земель (Gen., pl.)

      весна (a spring: Nom., sing.) — весни (springs: Nom., pl.) — весен (Gen., pl.)

     

  5. In the plural Accusative case:

    • nouns which name persons have the form of Genitive case:

      бачу жінок, сестер… — I see women, sisters… (Accusative case, plural)

      Квіти для жінок, сестер. — The flowers for women and sisters. (Genitive, plural)

    • nouns which mean inanimate things have often the form of Nominal case:

      збираю вишні, груші, ракети, книжки… — I am gathering cherries, pears, rockets, books… (Accusative case, plural)

      вишні, груші, ракети, книжки… — cherries, pears, rockets, books… (Nominal case, plural)

    • some names of domestic animals, insects use both forms of Nominal and Genitive cases:

      маю свиней/свині, овець/вівці, корів/корови, кіз/кози, гусей/гуси… — I have pigs, sheep, cows, goats, geese… (Accusative case, plural)

      свині, вівці, корови, кози, гуси… — pigs, sheep, cows, goats, geese… (Nominal case, plural)

      ферма для свиней, овець, корів, кіз, гусей… — a farm for pigs, sheep, cows, goats, geese… (Genitive, plural)
